How Does Our Garden Grow?

“I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in me—and I in him—bears much fruit, because apart from me you can accomplish nothing. John 15:5 (NET)

Without water, light and fertile soil seeds planted in a garden will soon wither and die. Water is needed to open the hard shell so the seed can germinate in the soil in which it was sown. Sunlight is needed to provide warmth and gives the seed energy to grow. Soil is the bed for the seeds to grow roots and to remain stable as they grow into the flower or plant they were meant to be. The soil must be good soil and have the right mixture of nutrients to provide the seeds with what they need to germinate.

In the same way, the fertile ground of our hearts needs the right soil into which the seeds are sown and nurtured with water and light. The seeds are sown in our hearts by reading the precious words of Scripture. Jesus said,

“If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ ” 39 Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. John 7: 37-39

Jesus is the Light of the World and He came into this world to save us from our sins. When we open our hearts to Him by allowing the Holy Spirit to “germinate” the seeds sown by Scripture; God will take what was sown and help us to grow to reflect the beauty of Jesus. When the conditions are right, seeds will grow into beautiful fragrant flowers. The more seeds sown, the greater and more beautiful the garden. The more we read the words of Scripture and allow the Holy Spirit to show us how to tend to the seeds, the more beautiful the garden of our hearts will become.

Conversely, if we don’t allow the Living Water to nurture the garden of our hearts; any seeds sown there will quickly die. They will stay dormant underneath the ground and we will never see their hidden beauty or enjoy their sweet fragrance.

Is God speaking to your heart right now? Why not write it down?
